Monetising your website

There are a number of simple but effective ways of earning money from your website.

Affiliate adverts

You sign up to an affiliate marketing scheme and start promoting the company or product. You should never pay to join an affiliate scheme. The only costs you might incur are those involved with promoting your website. Ideally you should only sign up to those affiliate schemes which are relevant to the content of your site and post their adverts on your site. Anyone clicking on the advert will be directed to the affiliate’s site and if they make a purchase you will get a percentage of the sale. Percentages vary from scheme to scheme but can be very lucrative.

Pay per click adverts

Put simply you will be paid a small amount each time one of your visitors clicks on one of these adverts. Although Google Adsense is the biggest player in this market there are many other companies offering similar services such as Chikita. A word of caution here, if you are going to use Pay Per Click adverts do not submit your site to any traffic exchange sites, offer your visitors any incentive or ask them to click on these adverts as this will get your account banned.

Sell advertising space

This comes into its’ own when you have lots of visitors to your site. You can charge what you like for this, the more visitors you have the more you can charge potential advertisers. You can also set the length of time the advert is displayed i.e. monthly quarterly annually etc. This does, however, require you to go out and sell the advertising space to potential clients. The best thing is that you get to

Selling your own products

If you are selling your own products then you may not want to bother with either affiliate adverts or pay per click, as, after all, you want your visitors to buy from you not go wandering off looking at other sites.

The key to success is getting as much quality targeted traffic as possible to your site.

Whether or not you choose to use any or all of the above methods of monetising your website there are a number of things to bear in mind.

  1. Don’t get carried away and fill your webpage with too many adverts. This can distract your visitors from the main content of your site and quite frankly looks bad. A few well placed eye catching adverts will be far more effective.
  2. There are three key areas on your page that are the most effective for placing adverts a) top b) left side c) right side.
  3. When signing up for affiliate schemes don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the more you sign up for the better it will be. Remember you have to monitor these accounts and keep the adverts up to date. It is much better, from an administrative point of view, for you to sign up to one or two schemes that promote multiple brands.
  4. Ideally you keep the adverts relevant to the content of your website. For example: if your website is about spare parts for cars your visitors are unlikely to be interested in adverts for ladies perfumes.
  5. If your are getting lots of quality visitors to your site but they are not bothering with your affiliate adverts then put some other affiliate adverts up. At the end of the day this is all about you making money. If an advert is not generating any income then it is taking up valuable space on your website.

It is quite possible that you will have seen various adverts claiming to show you how to make $370 or £370 (the currency changes depending on your location but not the amount) simply by post a few links on Google and then sitting back and wait for the money to roll in. DO NOT under any circumstances sign up for these schemes. At best they are merely trying to sell you information that is available for nothing. As with any scheme that claims to make you loads of money for little or no effort on your part they are preying on people’s natural urge to make as much money as possible as possible with as little effort, which, let’s face it, that is what we would all like to do i.e. make money without doing anything. The only people who make money out of these schemes are the sellers.

To make a sustainable income from the internet will take time and effort on your part.
